Hey everyone! Not had a look at a Motocross Helmet in a while but I saw a gem of an MX lid in our new arrivals so I thought I’d have a good look at it- the LS2 MX470 Subverter Motocross Helmet is a very cool and interesting bit of kit.
The Subverter caught my attention for a few reasons. The materials, the features, it’s price range and the number of graphics options it’s available in.
So I’ll start with the materials, the shell material to be specific. It’s not just made of a normal, quality thermoplastic which already does the job for most MXers that come to us for a lid. It’s made from a KPA, a Kinetic Polymer Alloy, which is LS2’s blend of different types of thermoplastics and other materials that results in a shell that is light weight, disperses impact energy well and has great penetration resistance.
The shape of the shell makes the helmet a good fit for people with a more oval shaped head. And the shell comes in three sizes that they use different size padding with inside, so you’ll be able to get a helmet that’s a good size for you and not unnecessarily large.
The padding inside the helmet caught my eye because of how unique and colourful it is. With all those colours it’s certainly more interesting to look at when you’re putting it on but I suppose it could help people who find putting the padding back into a helmet a bit confusing with a bit of colour association. If anything, at least you’ll be able to tell when your padding is getting a bit grimey.
In which case- the padding is fully removable, so you can throw it all into a pillow case on a normal wash then let it drip dry to have a fresh helmet again. The fabrics in the padding aren’t just interesting colours either, they’re a hypoallergenic material that also wicks moisture away to keep you comfortable in the heat.
Speaking of heat- the LS2 MX470 Subverter features some impressive ventillation. With vents on the mouth guard, the brow, over the head and plenty of exhaust vents on the back- I imagine it would be a challenge for anyone to complain about being too hot in one of these.
The chin strap is reinforced and features a double D-ring fastener, keeping your lid nice and secure on your head while you’re speeding over muddy bumps and uneven terrain. Just in case you do get into an accident- the Subverter has one of the best ideas ever introduced to modern helmets. The LS2 MX470 Subverter’s cheek padding has an Emergency Release System. This allows paramedics to pull out the cheek pads easily so that they can remove the helmet from the wearer without risking further injury.
The LS2 MX470 is available in three solid colours and six different graphics options, with plenty of colours in there to help you match with your bike and stand out from the competition. The solid versions of the Subverter are priced at £149 and the graphics versions of the helmet are priced at £179 which puts this great quality helmet in a comfortable, affordable, sub-£200 price range. [Prices accurate on 06/02/18]
So if you’re interested in getting yourself a new MX lid either to get into the sport, replace an old helmet or even just grabbing a spare- the LS2 MX 470 Subverter is definitely a worthy choice and well worth a go. thanks for reading, everyone! Until next time!
