It is with a heavy heart that I have to replace my helmet today. After a low-speed spill off my bike at a Diesel soaked roundabout, I ended up bumping my noggin and although the damage on the outside only appears to be be a small but deep scuff- I decided it’s better to be safe than sorry. I bought the helmet in October of 2015 at the old Ghostbikes location; a Shox Assault in gloss black so that I had my own, comfortable helmet to do my CBT in rather than make do squeezing into a helmet that belongs to someone else. And it had been my lid of choice ever since despite owning an Arai as well. It wasn’t perfect, it did fog up in the colder winter weather, so I had to ride with the visor up a crack to let the air flow through and keep things from getting misty. And it liked to whistle when going over 40mph down the bypass. But I really did love that helmet like it was a favourite hat. It was light, comfortable and never overly snug even when wearing a balaclava in winter. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve been thankful for the sun visor when I’ve been dazzled on my way home and that the lever for that sun visor was so easily accessible and quick to use. But yesterday it did what all helmets were made to do- It protected me.
It may have only been a low-speed accident but when you think about it, it could have been far worse. The full weight of a grown man, assisted by the weight of a toppling bike all coming down into one focused spot on one side of the forehead- Had I not been wearing anything I would have definitely been in trouble. But thanks to my helmet the trauma to my head felt like but a firm jostling and I was able to pick myself up immediately. For a budget motorcycle helmet at £49.99 it was definitely worth the money, after all the small scuffs and dings of general use and storage over the course of a whole year, it did it’s job to the letter. I’ve been telling myself that I’ll try something new, give a different brand a go and see how it is. But my experience with my old Shox and the trust I had in it has been causing me to hesitate in my choice and stick with the brand I know. That’s surely a sign of a good helmet.
