Casual Kit – Under The Hundred

Hey there, everyone! We’ve got to make the most of the nice weather while it lasts and get all the rides in that we can. But riding in the warm weather can be a pain to, being so hot in all that gear and a lot of bike gear isn’t great for socialising or blending in. So I thought I’d make a blog post to talk about some casual gear that will be great for casual rides, allow you to blend in a social crowd but also keep you well protected. finding decent casual looking gear can be an expensive search though and the total cost can really climb up depending on the brands you’re looking at.

So for this particular list I’ve challenged myself to only look at items with a price tag under £100. To keep the prices low there may have to be a little bit of compromise though, such as a bit less versatility for various weather conditions. So this list of gear is ideally for wearing on a nice, warm, dry day.

The first item I thought of was shirts. I’ve covered motorcycle hoodies and such before but until it was brought to my attention, I didn’t know that actual motorcycle shirts even existed. One such shirt is the Oxford Kickback Motorcycle Shirt. The “shell” of the shirt is made from a durable, slightly stretchy cotton, making things still feel comfortable and natural as a shirt should instead of a more tough-to-move-in material. It does well with abrasion resistance for what it is with extra hidden layers of material but to help keep your skin safe the shirt has a whole second layer to talk about.

That second layer is the Kevlar lining. Inside the jacket you have great coverage of 100% DuPont Kevlar, a material famous for it’s abrasion resistance and ability to hold up in extreme circumstances making this jacket very reliable. It’s a great, protective option that you could wear on a casual ride out, wear it on the bike and hop off without needing a wardrobe change. No one would even know it was a motorcycle shirt at whatever social happening you happen to be going to. At £89.95, this is a really great bit of kit.

This next item is one I’ve covered in a blog before- The Agrius Cool Summer Evo Leather Motorcycle Gloves. These gloves have to go into my list of ideal casual wear for a few reasons. The first reason is the looks- these gloves look great. They’re nothing flashy with lots of colour and in-your-face branding like you can find on sporty looking gear. They’re a simple, classy looking pair of leather gloves that’ll save your skin and look great both as part of a casual kit or if you’ve got a more classic look going on.

Another advantage of these gloves in that they’re soft. You can roll these gloves up and easily store them in a pocket if you don’t want to keep them in your helmet, making them ideal for carrying around with you. The next great thing about these gloves is the price. Not everything on this list is going to be super-expensive designer stuff and these gloves are my most favourite of all the bargains. At £14.99 you have to give these gloves a try.

Now on to footwear! The Akito Citizen Motorcycle Boots blend in disguised as a normal pair of trendy hightop shoes but really they’re a pair of protective bike boots. They’ve got everything a biker could need from moulded reinforced areas to non-slip soles and waterproofing. You’d never know that these boots were for bikers, even if you were to get up close to them and have a really hard look. So they’re perfect for wearing on the bike and then hopping off to mingle without wearing a lager pair of clumsy boots or something way more obvious. For £74.99 this is a really great find and I want mine in black.

For leg wear I have to go with the Richa Hammer Motorcycle Jeans since I own a pair. Wearing them right now, even! These jeans have been great and I’ll be investing in another pair soon since I like them so much. They’re a brilliant pair of jeans that are lined with Kevlar to give you a safe and abrasion resistant pair of pants. No one would even know that you’re probably wearing one of the most protective pairs of pants in the room. They even come with removable knee armour inserts so you have the choice of riding with a bit more impact protection. I love mine to bits and the £89.99 price tag has been well worth it. There’s a few colours to choose from, I already have a pair in black so I reckon I’ll get a blue pair next.

Casual Motorcycle Shirts

Hey, everyone! I’m still trying to make the most out of the summer and the dry, sunny days we have left to shed some light on some great bits of warm weather gear. I’ve seen a few newer items in-store like the lined, armoured biker shirts for the riders who like a more casual look and it got me thinking about them. About what kind of selection we have when it comes to biker shirts and what we’re getting for our money. So I’ve done a bit of leg-work and put together a short list of five protective motorcycle shirts for the casual-look rider.

Starting with the least expensive of them at £89.95 we have the Oxford Kickback Motorcycle Shirt. Despite being the lowest price, you’re actually getting a really good shirt. The outer layer is made of a durable Cotton for comfort, flexibility and offers a bit of warmth against the winds that a biker will ride through. Beneath the Cotton the shirt has a lining made from 100% DuPont Kevlar, a material famous for it’s abrasion resistance and ability to hold up in a grind down the road. It also has belt loops at the back which are handy for keeping the shirt from riding up while you’re reaching forward. It will also help to keep the shirt from bunching up to expose skin to the road if you do find yourself sliding down it on your back.

Next up and working up in price a little bit at £99.99 is the ARMR Moto Aramid Check Motorcycle Shirt. The outer layer of the shirt is made with a durable but flexible Cotton, giving the appearance and feel of a normal shirt. Beneath the outer layer is a 280gms layer of DuPont woven Aramid, a brilliant material for abrasion resistance and saving your skin in an accident. Unlike the previous jacket, the ARMR Moto Check shirt comes with CE certified armour in the shoulders and elbows while featuring a pocket ready for a back protector. There are two outer chest pockets, two inner chest pockets, the front of the jacket closes with a zip and the cuffs are adjustable. So it has a lot of little extras over the Oxford Kickback to make it a better shirt for biking in and £99.99 is still a really fair price for biker gear such as this.

Next is the Richa Lumber Motorcycle Shirt. Priced a little higher at £119.99 the outer material of the jacket is a bit thicker than normal but it doesn’t feature an Aramid or Kevlar liner beneath. That’s because the outer layer is a cotton mix that has been reinforced with high abrasion resistant fabric and has a mesh lining beneath for comfort and breathability. The cool thing about this shirt though is that is comes fully armoured with d3O level 1 armour in the elbows, shoulders and back. The jacket opens up with a main central zipper but is disguised like a normal shirt beneath buttons. It’s a great, protective shirt that has started to blur the lines between a normal shirt and a lined shirt but having reinforced materials.

Another from Richa, the Richa Denim Legend Motorcycle Jacket gives the appearance of a denim shirt but it blurs the lines between shirt and biker jacket even more than the Lumber does. It’s made of a Jeans materials mix that’s been reinforced with high abrasion resistant fabric but also have extra kevlar protection at selected impact areas and fragile places just in case. Like it’s little brother the Lumber, the Denim Legend comes with level 1 D3O armour in the shoulders, elbows and back. It has two outer pockets, one inside pocket and even has a short connector zipper for attaching to Richa motorcycle trousers. For £149.99 you’re getting a superior biker shirt and hey- it’s not in a plaid pattern this time!

We’re back to plaid now though with our last and most expensive of the biker shirts in the blog entry. The Rev’It Bison Motorcycle Overshirt is naturally the most expensive because- it’s made by Rev’It.. But Rev’It are known for making great gear that’s bursting with protective capability and features. The shell of this jacket is a bit different from the others as well, it’s made from a polyester canvas that feels good and sturdy- like you can tell how abrasion resistant it is to the touch but it’s still nicely flexible. Behind that outer layer is Rev’It’s famous PWR|Shield, a fabric with amazing cut, tear and abrasion resistance, so you know your skin is in good hands. The shirt comes with level 1 armour in the shoulders and elbows but has nothing in the back protector pocket that takes a certain size of SEESOFT Type RV Protector insert.

As if all the abrasion protection and armour wasn’t enough, the shirt even offers more weather protection than the others. It has a Hydratex®|Lite layer that provides all weather protection, wind, water, whatever it is, all with just that one layer. But if things get too warm it even has a ventilation panel at the back. Complete with jeans loop and a short connector zipper, this jacket is perfection when it comes to a piece of casual gear that covers all the bases. The £199.99 price tag is certainly steep but, as usual, Rev’It have made a piece of kit built to last that once you have it- you don’t need another one to fill in for any shortcomings.

And that’s all for bike shirts! There’s a whole lot of plaid but they look great and they’re all great value for money for what each shirt provides. Each an every one of them deserves a place in a summer or casual-look bikers collection.

Summer Motorcycle Hoodies

Hey, everyone! Since I’ve done an entry that covered a few different mesh motorcycle jackets I decided on another entry to cover a few different hoodies. Not everyone needs or wants a full-on jacket or maybe you’re someone who wants something a little more flexible. Perhaps your style is just something more casual. Whatever the case, I thought I’d mention a few of our hoodies that you may like to consider.

AGRIUS SOFTSHELL MOTORCYCLE JACKET

Starting with lowest price, we have the Agrius Softshell Motorcycle Jacket at £52.99. It’s another item I’ve covered in it’s own Agrius Softshell blog entry. It’s got to be one of the most comfortable motorcycle garments I’ve ever tried on- a trend I’ve noticed with pretty much all of the Agrius gear I’ve ever tried. It’s made of a soft shell material with a fleece backing for extra warmth and comfort and also has a mesh liner. It has armour in the elbows and shoulders and has a pocket for a back protector. So it has the potential to offer some great impact and wind protection. Soft elasticated cuffs make this hoodie a luxury to wear, it’s lightweight, it’s comfy and it’s a bargain at £52.99.

BLACK LYNX KEVLAR HOODIE

The Black Lynx Kevlar Hoodie is both an item I’ve covered in a blog entry before and I actually own one. At £69.99 you’re getting a lot more bang for your buck than with the Agrius Soft Shell. While this jacket doesn’t come with any armour installed it does have the pockets in the shoulders, elbows and back. But instead of already coming with armour it comes with something a bit better, something the Agrius Softshell could really use. Abrasion resistance- The ability to hold up in a slide should an unfortunate rider find themselves grinding down the road. And the Lynx does this amazingly thanks to what amounts to, essentially, an extra jacket inside it made of 220gsm DuPont Kevlar. It’s a really awesome, really protective, really comfortable hoodie and I love mine a whole lot.

AKITO BLOCK MOTORCYCLE HOODIE

The Akito Block Motorcycle Hoodie is a new one to me so I had a good long look at it. And I have to say, I may end up getting one of these too. For £98 you get a hoodie made with a %100 cotton fleece outer shell lined with a 180gsm Aramid liner, giving you all of the warmth, comfort and abrasion resistance you could need. It’s not quite the 220gsm of the Black Lynx, but the Akito block has loads of other features to make up for it. It comes with armour in the shoulders and elbows, has a zippered inner pocket for valuables and has a short connection zipper to attach to your pants- something I wish the Lynx had. It also has thumb locators on the cuffs so that your sleeves won’t ride up your forearms in a more forward leaning riding position. So while the second skin this hoodie offers isn’t quite as thick as the Black Lynx, it offers a whole lot more to make riding in it a bit more comfortable.

And those are my three hoodie picks for this entry. Each hoodie has it’s own strengths and weaknesses but, as with all motorcycle products, you’ll find less weaknesses with the more you’re willing to spend.

Biker Bomber Jackets

Hey, everyone! The sun is still out from time to time so it must still be the summer. And I’ve noticed a little bit of a trend- Motorcycle Bomber Jackets are getting quite popular! I’ve seen plenty of people wearing the Spada Air Force One jacket and the only other Bomber style jacket I could think of off the top of my head was our own jacket the Black Iconic. So I thought I would do a little bit of digging and see just what kind on selection we have at Ghostbikes.com

First up is the popular Spada Air Force One Motorcycle Jacket. For £99.99 you’re actually getting a pretty good jacket at decent value for money. The shell looks good, it’s made from a protective maxdura construction and has a waterproof membrane making it great for a number of different weathers. It does have armour in the shoulder and elbows but is lacking one in the back, so while the jacket is still great- it’s not as safe as it could possibly be right off the hanger. But it does have a back protector pocket so you could always put one in later.

Next is another one from Spada, the Spada Happy Jack Harrington. For £149.99 you’d be getting a jacket with a wax cotton twill shell that is protective and looks like a nice, reliable material. It has a fixed waterproof membrane inside for weather versatility but the thermal liner inside is also fixed inside. So this jacket is pleasantly warm but you don’t want to layer up too much underneath since you don’t have option of pulling the thermal liner out. Just like it’s little sibling, the Air Force One, it has armour in the shoulders and elbows but doesn’t have anything in the back although there is a back protector pocket there. The cuffs on the jacket are made from a soft material of comfort but the collar of the jacket is a corduroy comfort fit collar, a bit better at protecting the neck from whipping winds. Over all it’s a pretty good jacket and still quite good value for money even though the extra £50 is quite a price increase for a sturdier collar and waterproof pockets.

At last, a biker’s Bomber jacket from a different brand, the ARMR Moto Bomber Motorcycle Jacket. This jacket is really good value for money when it comes to protection, the outer shell is made from polyester- a common material in biker gear for its toughness but your money is really buying what you get underneath it. The jacket has a REISSA waterproof membrane for the wet, a 75gm thermal liner for the cold and for extra skin-saving capability- it even has a 280gms Aramid liner. So you’ve got twice the protective layering on this jacket than on the others. The jacket has CE certified armour in shoulders and elbows but, like the others so far, only features an empty pocket waiting for a back protector to complete this great jackets’ protective arsenal. £139.99 for this jacket, is a very not-bad-at-all price.

And lastly; we have Ghostbikes.com’s own brand of bomber jackets, the Black Iconic Motorcycle Jacket and the Black Retro Motorcycle Jacket, the best value-for-money bomber jackets out there. I’m not even saying that just because it’s our own brand either, they really do offer as much bang-for-your-buck as you could hope for in a biker jacket. The fabric is made from a Nylon construction so it’s flexible and light but tough as well when you need it to be. It has a fixed waterproof lining to keep you dry and a thermal liner to keep you warm but it’s also removable for your preference.

A nifty little extra are the belt loops in the inside of the jacket to help keep the back of the jacket from riding up if your riding position has a bit more of a forward lean to it. It has plenty of pockets, the three on the outside aren’t waterproof but the two on the inside will keep your valuables dry and safe. The soft and elasticated cuffs make this jacket a luxury to wear and give your neck and wrists plenty of comfortable room to move. And unlike all of the others, these jackets come with armour in the shoulders, elbows and back; a viscoelastic soft armour that hardens in the moment of an impact to protect you and has the highest CE safety rating going. For the Iconic at £79.99 and the Retro at £84.99 you’re getting an impressively versatile and protective bomber jacket at the best value for money you can find.

Oxford Ladies Super Leggings

Hello, everyone! I don’t do enough blogs on ladies bike gear and a new ladies’ item has just been brought to my attention. The weather is still warm enough for riding in bike jeans but what about the ladies that want something a bit more stylish yet still protective? Well then, lets take a look at the Oxford Ladies Super Leggings!

You’re probably thinking something along the lines of – “Leggings? But they’re so thin, they won’t do any good!”

If it were an ordinary pair of leggings you’d certainly be right but these leggings are far from it. They’re equipped with all they need to protect your legs on a bike and Oxford have done really well to include all of that protection in a pair of leggings without adding a load of bulk. They’ve done such a good job of keeping the bulk down that they could even be worn under your normal clothing.

The shell of the Ladies Super Leggings themselves are made from 92% Polyester, a common material in motorcycle gears for is abrasion resistance and 8% Elastane, to give them a bit of stretch. Beneath this protective yet stretchy shell is a complete lining made from DuPont Kevlar. This Kevlar lining 95% Kevlar, a material famous for having excellent abrasion resistance and 5% Elastane, so that is has bit of stretch to it like the outer shell.

Unlike in a lot of motorcycle jeans that only provide the reinforced areas of Kevlar or Aramid in the thighs and buttocks areas, the Oxford Ladies Super Leggings give as close to 100% coverage as they reasonable can. You’ll essentially be wearing a pair of polyester leggings over a pair of Kevlar leggings for maximum protection.

And if that’s not enough for you, the leggings also have knee protectors in velcro free knee pockets. So your knees are protected and you’re won’t get irritated by velcro digging in at you anywhere. The protectors themselves are CE Level 2, the highest safety rating they can get, and they’re made from a viscoelastic foam. So the armour in the knees is flexible and soft but in when impacted, it becomes rigid to disperse the impact forces and protect you. While the leggings don’t come with hip armour they do have pockets for them so you can slip in a set if you wish and give yourself a bit more armour coverage.

And those are the Oxford Ladies Super Leggings! They’re actually a really cool bit of ladies’ biker gear and quite a nod to the modern capabilities of motorcycle protection, putting so much into them without making them puffy and restricting. If you’re interested in a pair of your own, they come in sizes 8 through to 22 for £99.99. Which is really good considering a lot of other brands would charge £150 to £200 or more for similar products.
