Airoh Executive Convertible Motorcycle Helmet

Hey, everyone! I decided it was about time I took a look at another helmet. But I wanted to have a play with a brand I’m slightly less familiar with and it had to be a helmet that has all new features to me. So I had a dig around and then I remembered a helmet I’d seen not too long ago from Airoh– a convertible helmet that had the potential to be something really, really cool. I’ve since revisited that helmet and now here I am to report my findings on the Airoh Executive Convertible Motorcycle Helmet!

I first took a look at this helmet a while ago because it reminded me of a character from a sci fi game, I was attracted to this larger opening at the front of the helmet with a thinner chin bar that allows for a nice big visor and a massive vertical field of vision [and how much more awesome it would look if it had a dark smoke visor but I don’t think there are any]. The visor is extra wide too, so you’re not going to miss a thing going on in the world in front of you. It’s even pinlock ready with the insert provided, so you can just install it and worries of that large visor fogging up are a thing of the past.

It’s a convertible helmet because the chin bar can actually come off, converting the Airoh Executive into an open face lid. And just so you don’t lose the chin bar, it clips to the back of the helmet- it’s really gimmicky but I kind of love it for that. The inner side of the chin bar is lined with a sturdy foam giving it a reassuring bit of strength and where it joins on to the helmet is also pleasantly tough, giving a bit of peace of mind if I should ride in it, being a full-face lid kind of guy I like a solid chin bar.

The shell is thermoplastic, keeping the helmet tough but also nicely light weight considering all the little extras around this helmet that can sometimes lead to lids giving the neck and shoulders quite a workout. Extras like the gadgets keeping the chin guard in place, the unique storage mechanism that holds the chin guard on the helmet when not in use, the internal sun visor, there’s loads to this lid, so keeping it to a wearable weight has impressed me quite a bit.

The padding in the Airoh Executive is also of a surprising quality. It’s hypoallergenic as well as removable and washable but more than that it’s really snug. The padding around the neck area is definitely not lacking and gives a good fit and seal helping with safety and wind noise. This does mean that it’ll definitely feel too tight at first but give it a bit of time and try it on for a good few minutes before making a decision. The padding will give space after a bit of time, so take this into consideration as well; the more snug a fit you have while being comfortable- the safer the helmet is for you.

And those are all of the more unique features of the Airoh Executive but it does have lots of other little features that make life a little more comfortable. The internal sun visor for when the Sun is at just the right place in the sky to burn out your eyes. A micrometric buckle on the chinstrap to make fastening and unfastening the helmet nice an easy. Quick release visor if the original gets damaged or you just want a replacement.

The Airoh Executive is a great helmet. It’s unique and gives the rider loads of options while keeping them safe- it really does it’s best to make the rider be safer for themselves with all that extra field of view. It would make a brilliant helmet for touring, for the choice of all the configurations, the sun visor, all of that visible area so you can get in some quality sightseeing. The only thing you’d need to consider is that chin guard and have a think about your microphone placement if you ride with one as it may catch a bit more noise than another helmet that has a good chin curtain.

Childhood Dreams of Flying an X-Wing

Hey, everyone! Ever since I was a little kid and was introduced to the world of Star Wars there’s been two things I’ve always wanted- A lightsaber and to fly an X-Wing. Or at least to have one of the helmets. And it’s like HJC have looked into those childhood dreams of mine and decided to deliver- they’ve got the HJC FG-70S X-Wing Fighter Pilot Open Face Helmet! I don’t really like open face helmets but I’ll have to get this one out of principal, it’s just too cool!

The amazing, movie accurate, Star Wars graphics aside- as far as open face helmets go, this one actually has a few features that make it one of the safer and more luxurious open face helmets that I’ve seen.

The shell of the helmet is made from an advanced composite of Kevlar and Fibreglass, two of the toughest materials you’ll ever hear of in the world of biking but they’re also really light. So the helmet can take the hits if it needs to but all that protection won’t weigh your head down, saving you the pain of neck strain and letting you ride more comfortably for longer.

If you do get into an accident, beneath the shell is a dual density EPS liner, an impact absorbing foam that will soak up the force of a hit so that your head doesn’t have to. The comfort padding that holds your head in is also very nifty. The padding is all removable and interchangeable within the size of the EPS liner inside. So you can get a really custom and comfy fit. On top of that, the padding has a Silvercool interior- it’s moisture wicking, anti-bacterial and odour eliminating as well as being washable. So your helmet keeps fresher for longer and it’s really easy to clean when it’s not so fresh any more. Just chuck it in the washing machine on a regular quick wash and let it air dry.

The helmet has a built in drop-down, amber sun visor, a very cool addition that really rounds off the X-Wing Pilot look. But if the drop down visor isn’t to your liking- the helmet can still be worn with goggles that can be secured by the little snap on the back of the helmet. There are three snaps on the top of the helmet too, so if you like the HJC FG-70S Helmet can be worn with a short open face helmet peak or even an compatible snap-on open face visor.

Over all, even if I don’t plant on using it- I may still have to get this helmet just for the Star Wars graphics alone. But for those of you who love your open face lids, this helmet is a fantastic choice. For £249.99 it’s made of all the right stuff, it has all the right features and it’s got awesome graphics. “Stay on target” and live out your dreams of being an X-Wing Pilot. Ride safe in your new Star Wars Helmet and- as a great Jedi once said- “Feel; don’t think. Use your instincts.”

The Black Classic and Limited Edition Motorcycle Helmet

Hello everyone, I don’t often cover open face helmets but I thought I would take some time to have a look at one from our own brand; Black. Technically its a two-for-one blog post as the helmet goes by two names- The Black Classic and the Black Limited Edition. The Black Open Face Helmets are great value for money and the choice of many bikers that wear open face helmets who come into the shop looking for a cool lid to suit their ride. And with so much choice they almost always find something they like.

As far as open face helmets go- I really don’t mind the look of these ones. There’s something quite pilot-y and reminiscent of Luke Skywalker in his X-Wing about them that I actually quite enjoy, especially in the Limited Edition Black 13 graphic. Its all because of the aerodynamic shell, its made from a Polycarbonate construction that’s light weight but still strong enough to keep you safe. Many people who’ve picked them up have been surprised at how light weight they are compared to many others, I suppose that’s at least one advantage they have over a full face helmet.

They have fully removable liners made from Suede that are designed for a comfort fit which is really handy for being able to keep the inside of your lid clean and it feels a bit more luxurious than your usual mesh liner. The leather just adds a touch of class and it contributes to the look of the whole helmet- it wouldn’t look right without the leather, would it?

The buckle on the strap is a micrometric adjustment buckle. I know some people aren’t big fans of these but personally I really like them. They make getting the helmet off and on so much less of a hassle compared to the traditional double-D fastening and it’s a time saver I’ve come to appreciate personally.

Another feature that I enjoy because it lends to the pilot-like nature of the helmet is the internal, retractable sun visor. It amazes me how the helmets can be so light and compact and still have such a feature. The mechanism for the visor is nothing fancy, its easy to use with one hand by using a small tab on the visor its self and if you don’t like it, you can just pull it off. Since it’s kept on with locator pins hidden inside the helmet you can remove it with a careful but firm tug. It also makes changing the visor easier if you fancy a replacement or want to give a more colourful visor a try. We’ve got a few different internal sun visor options for the Black Classic and The Limited Edition including Dark Smoke, Light Smoke, Iridium Blue and HD Orange. The Black Classic and Limited Edition helmets don’t come with an open face helmet peak as standard but you can purchase them seperately for just £17.99, they’ll even fit other brands that use the same fitment too.

If you add all the graphics options of the Black Classic and the Black Limited Edition together you have 15 different graphics options. You have even more if you include all of the colour variations of those graphics too, so if you want to get yourself an open face helmet you really are spoilt for choice. Personally I’m quite impressed with them, which is a tough feat accomplish with me when we’re talking about open face helmets as I prefer my full-face protection.
