Hey, everyone! The Black Brand is still growing, we’ve just got our own new line of leather jackets and now we’ve got something to wear with them- The Black Kevlar Motorcycle Jeans. New! Men’s Leather Jackets!

Hey, everyone! We’ve got some great news from Ghostbikes today, the shop is growing, the range of brands we stock has been growing and now the product range of one of our very own brands, Black, is growing too! We officially have our own line of Leather Motorcycle Jackets!

We have five new models, three for the guys and two for the girls and they all look awesome. They all have a classic and custom look to them but they all still have their own character, each worthy of their own spotlight in the blogs. So I’ll dedicate this blog entry to the men’s leather jackets.

I already mentioned this in my last entry about the jackets, a broad intro to all of them before they were on the website but the Black Leather Jackets all share a really cool feature. The jacket comes with full CE level 2 soft armour installed in the elbows, shoulders and back, the highest safety rating motorcycle armour can get. It’s absolutely a feature worth note since most motorbike jackets will only come with armour installed in the elbows and shoulders and they’ll often only provide CE Level 1. It’s not often that I see a jacket that’s ready-to-ride right off the rail. Or a jacket that is as safe it can ever be right out of the shop without having to spend a bit more on some aftermarket upgrades.
I’ve used this same Soft Armour in my other jackets for a while and I wrote another blog on it closer to the start of the year. It’s viscoelastic, nice and soft when worn normally but turns to rubber in an impact to disperse impact force. Very cool stuff that’s saved me aches and pains when coming off the bike on Diesel soaked roundabouts.

Another feature shared by all of the jackets is that they’re all 100% Genuine leather. Not pleather or a weaker substitute. It’s the real deal as real leather has always been the best protection for bikers in a harsh slide down the road. Now, on to each individual Jacket.

The Black Cronus
A brilliantly classy looking jacket that would look awesome on a rider whether they have a café racer, custom or classic ride. No matter the colour you get this jacket in, black, blue or brown, the light stripes really round out the design and set off that retro vibe. At £200 with an RRP of £260, it’s a brilliant addition to any biker’s collection.

The interior of the Black Cronus Leather Jacket has a fixed liner for warmth but is still offers plenty of space for a jumper. I recommend trying the jacket on while wearing clothes similar to what you’d normally wear underneath it as the fit is quite tight for a more fitted appearance. I’m personally a Large in most jackets but I went for the XL when I got my Black Leather Jacket so I feel like going a size up is good advice for most.

The jacket has two zipped pockets on the outside, with genuine YKK zips and features a modest amount of adjustability in the waist with buckles on both sides. On the inside, the jacket has two internal pockets, one in the liner secured with velcro and a zipped stash-pocket a bit higher up for keeping phones and documents safe.

The Black Erebus
Another very fashionable, designer jacket it has a more textured, suede-like finish. Priced at £200 with an RRP of £260 it’s a very smart and looks awesome both on the bike and being worn around as a casual jacket. It’s already a popular choice in our showroom.

Unlike the Cronus, the Erebus Leather Jacket has a removable thermal liner, allowing you the freedom to keep it in for colder rides or take it out on warmer rides. Or perhaps you just want a little more room in the jacket to be able to wear an extra layer beneath it like I do.

The Erebus has a couple more pockets too. It has two zippered pockets in the usual place you’d expect on the outside, an additional zippered pocket on the chest and a popper pocket on the left arm. There’s also an extra pocket inside, there’s one on either side of the internal liner and a zippered stash pocket a bit higher up. So you won’t be stuck for places to store your belongings. Like the Cronus, it’s a snug fit, so I recommend trying one on while wearing similar clothes to what you’ll have on underneath it for the best sizing results.

The Black Notus
The Notus Leather Jacket is my favourite of all three of the new men’s leather jackets. It just looks damn good and makes me feel damn good to wear it. So good that this was my personal choice when I decided I had to have a new lather jacket.

This jacket isn’t my favourite just for how awesome it looks though. It’s definitely the most fair-weather oriented jacket of the three of them but still has a couple of features that give it a little edge over the Cronus and Erebus. The first one being the removable thermal liner. I typically like to squeeze a good hoodie under my bike jacket and keep warm that way, so having the liner be removable to free up a bit of room makes the jacket feel better and retains that fitted appearance even with a hoodie underneath.

Some may think having a hoodie beneath this jacket would cause it to get too hot but thanks to the perforated areas of this jacket- it’s excellently breathable, allowing the wearer to keep comfortable. It also allows air to cycle through the jacket nicely while out on a ride. I wore mine on my way home from work not too long ago with a hoodie beneath and I was surprisingly comfortable despite the cold temperatures outside. Never got too hot, never got too cold.

It may be a little more expensive than the other two jackets at £225 with an RRP of £285 but it’s worth every penny. I’ve already received lots of compliments on it, I feel confident in the jacket and I already have confidence in the armour inside it having tried and tested it before.

To keep the jackets from lifting up while you’re riding and leaning forward, causing you to get a cold blast of air up the back; the Black Leather Jackets have loops for attaching around your belt. This keeps the jacket securely in place, preventing any unexpected breezes up the back and keeping the CE Level 2 armour in it’s place to do it’s job. they also have a connector zip so that you can connect your jacket to a pair of motorcycle trousers such as the Black Atom Motorcycle Trousers or another pair of trousers with a compatible zip.

These jackets are excellent, they’ve arrived just in time for us to catch a few last dry rides out for the year but even if you decide to take the armour out- they make brilliant casual jackets and would even make an awesome gift for the holidays. So grab yours while leather is heading out-of-season and grab a bargain before we decide to raise the prices when the weather gets nice again!

ARMR Moto Kumaji Motorcycle Jacket

Hey, everyone! I feel like it’s time for yours truly to get a new motorbike jacket. The Agrius Orion I currently have has done very well but with winter and heavier weathers on the way I feel like my tired old jacket could use a break. I only spent £57.99 on my Orion, so I’m looking to invest a bit more in my new jacket with a budget of up to £160.

I’ll be commuting to work in my new jacket, so it has to be long-lasting, comfortable and able to handle any kind of weather that I may have to ride through. Here where I live that can be anything from the loveliest, warmest, most sunny day ever to freezing temperatures and soggy downpours depending on the season.

But it -is- going to be a jacket for work. So I don’t want to spend a ridiculous amount on because it could be subject to less-than-gentle treatment in the form of being hastily put on in dusty environments and such. Which is why I limited my budget to about £160, I don’t want to spend £300+ on a jacket like my Rev’It Masaru that I’d rather only use on nice days for social rides.

And looking through our ARMR Moto selection- I may have found the perfect jacket. The ARMR Moto Kumaji Motorcycle Jacket is only £10 over my budget at £169.99 and has a load of features that make it perfect for a commuter like myself so I don’t even feel that extra £10 sting.

The outer shell is made from a 600D Polytech fabric, a protective material made with Polyester- a common material in motorcycle garments for it’s toughness and abrasion resistance. It’s light and it’s flexible so you can move quite freely in it but it’ll save your skin if the time comes. It also features ARMR Moto’s TLS- Triple Lock Seam Technology- it’s ARMR’s way of triple stitching seams to ensure that they’re rip-proof and will be able to handle the strain in an accident.

As well as being protective on the outside, this jacket has an awesome amount of protective potential for the inside too. The jacket comes with a CE approved back protector which is a rare thing to be included, most jackets don’t have one as standard. There’s also CE approved shoulder armour and CE the approved elbow armour has adjustable height positions so you can get in it the right place just for you. It’s even compatible with ARMR Moto’s Hexagon Chest Shield A9115 [If you can get your hands on one]. There’s even kidney protection in this jacket, another level of protection that most jackets don’t bother with.

So this jacket can take the punishment- but can it handle the weather? It probably won’t surprise you that I’m about to tell you that- yes, it can, this jacket has just as much weather versatility as it does protection. To protect you from the wet and rain, this jacket has a DRY TEK Waterproof membrane that keeps water out while still being breathable. The Storm Flap beneath the main front zip also helps to keep rain out. Usually that zip is a bit of a natural problem area when it comes to waterproofing a jacket but the storm flap in this jacket acts as a gutter to catch any water trying to get through and guide it out of the jacket. Even the two external pockets on the front are waterproof which a lot of other jackets don’t bother with, so you won’t have to stuff your phone and wallet into the same stash-pocket inside the jacket.

To see you through the colder weather comfortably, the inside of the jacket has a detachable Double Quilted Thermo Liner. This liner will keep you plenty warm when the weather hits the lower temperatures and can even be taken out to help you deal with the warmer weather.

The jacket comes with a bit more protection though. Sort of. The best way to protect you from an accident is to keep you from getting into one in the first place, so the ARMR Moto Kumaji has Scotchlite and Vision Tech Reflective panels integrated into the jacket’s design and increase your chances of being seen by other road users. To increase your chances of this even further- the jacket also comes in a Hi-Vis colour that I’m quite partial to myself- It’ll be much better for when the winter comes and the days get shorter and darker.

It’s a really well-thought-out jacket. Everything from the protection and weatherproofing to the extra stuff like the Exact Fit System and link zipper for joining the jacket to a pair of ARMR Moto Trousers, it’s all designed for a biker that rides often, for long periods or both. Perfect for a commuter that rides to work on the day-to-day, so much so that RIDE Magazine even recommend it. The ARMR Moto Kumaji Motorcycle Jacket has definitely made the short list of potential jackets that I’ll be considering next pay day.

The Shoei RYD Motorcycle Helmet

Hey, everyone! I’m quite happy about this blog entry because I’ve been asked to have a look a helmet and try to help it get a little bit more of the attention it deserves. And its a Shoei helmet so there’s plenty for me to talk about. I’m looking at the Shoei RYD and its got a whole list of features dedicated to making this helmet comfortable to wear and safe to put your trust in.

As with all of the helmets I look at, lets start from the outside and work our way in, so first up is the Shoei RYD’s AIM shell. AIM stands for Advanced Integrated Matrix and its Shoei’s specially designed shell construction with a secret recipe that they keep to themselves. Instead of making the shell out of one uniform material like thermoplastics, the shell is made of layer upon layer of reinforced fibres. Fiberglass, special fibers, 3D Organic fibers, Organic fibers and more Fiberglass all made rigid with a corrosion resistant synthetic heat-set resin.

The edge that an AIM shell has over other shell materials like thermoplastics is that the flexibility of the compounded materials actually works to make the shell incredibly impact resistant. The numerous layers and fibres work together to disperse the force of an impact over a larger area of the shell and reduce the amount of force travelling through the helmet into the rider’s head. In addition the shell is actually very light which helps to prevent the rider from any neck strain and the shell is also penetration resistant. Its very advanced and very clever stuff with a recipe Shoei guards like the secret ingredient to a special sauce but suffice to say, if it’s fiber based and makes this shell more effective- it’s in there.

Beneath the AIM shell is a multi-density EPS Liner system. The multiple densities of the foam are designed to slow the head down in and impact and provide more protection to the more vulnerable areas of the head. This is to keep your head from smashing into the inside of your helmet by slowing the head down and reducing the amount of potential head and brain trauma. Its the same concept as the fluid surrounding the brain inside your skull and it works in a similar way. As such, after an impact the helmet may appear to have deformities and damage but the head will be fine. But also, even after a small accident, the helmet may appear to be fine but the foam inside the helmet may be deformed. So whether you have a big accident or a little one- it’s a good idea to change your helmet. Remember- to ensure the best and most protection out of your helmet, get one that fits properly and snugly.

The shell has other features other than just being really safe. Its also been aerodynamically designed inside wind tunnels to ensure that the helmet both sits on the head properly at higher speeds but cuts through the air to reduce neck and shoulder strain on the rider. The shell and EPS liner have vents and channels in them to optimise airflow through the helmet to keep the rider cool. Three inlets on the brow and chin allow air in through the front and two exhaust vents on the back let the warm air be pushed out.

The comfort liner inside the helmet is completely removable so that it is easy to keep fresh and clean but it also features a Emergency Quick Release System. There are small tabs, big enough to fit a finger in, under the cheek padding. This is so that if the worst does happen and you get into an accident, Paramedics can easily pull out the cheek padding and free your head from the helmet without moving your neck too much and prevent further injury.

The chin strap of the RYD has removable padding and a double D-ring fastening system for the best comfort and the most secure method of fastening with easy adjustability. The Visor is a mist retardant pinlock visor, so you’ll have to be huffing and puffing pretty hard to get it to fog up completely.

The aerodynamic shell, the visor, the comfort- is all adds up to what we call active protection- It’s actually helping you to keep from getting in an accident. A bold claim, you say but it’s true. By helping you see more around you and more clearly. To be comfortable and distraction free. To be light and relaxed, letting you ride for longer without strain. These are all elements of the helmet that allow you to see the danger before it becomes a danger. To keep you from distractions so you don’t miss a thing. And keep you from neck strain, allowing you to be in the best control over your machine even on long rides.

Overall the Shoei RYD is a well-thought-out helmet for the most hardy of road riders, designed for comfort and helping to keep you from getting in an accident as well as protecting your head in one. Shoei are so proud of it that they offer a 5 year warranty from the purchase date and a 7 year warranty from the helmet’s manufacture date.
