Hey, everyone. Well, it’s Spring. It’s great that the sun wants to shine every now and then but it’s still a pretty soggy season we have to grind through before we get to the nice, warm, proper riding weather.
I could use some new waterproof gear but with it being the home stretch to sunny days and dry roads- I don’t want to spend an absolute fortune on fancy bike gear if I can get away with spending a little less and holding out for the summer while I save up for better all-season gear later on in the Autumn.
So we want some low-cost waterproofing to last us through those spring downpours and have them on-hand for any summer showers later. So I reckon we’re looking at getting either an oversuit or an over jacket and over trousers combo. And we’ve got some options there.
The Black Beacon Oversuit is just £29.99, available in black or black with some hi-vis from sizes Small to XXL. It’s a brilliant, low cost, all-in-one option that you can keep in a backpack, or under your bike seat if you have the space.
Perfect for that literally rainy day and works a treat although oversuits can get a bit warm if you’ve layered up and they render vents in your gear more or less useless. But it’s a price I’m willing to pay to keep from getting drenched on a ride out and then being uncomfortable thereafter until it’s time to go home.
The next option comes in two halves, the Black Spectre Over Jacket and Black Spectre Over Trousers combo. A lot of people prefer this method of waterproofing for a couple of reasons. You can choose to just wear one or the other if not both, depending on how good your regular bike jacket and trousers beneath it are.
A lot of people will also tell they’re much easier to get in to than a whole oversuit and I can’t disagree with them. They don’t hold in as much heat as a whole suit, so it’s a little more comfortable in the rising temperatures we’ll see through the spring. The over jacket is £18.99, available in black or black and hi-vis and comes in sizes small to XXL. The over trousers are available for £12.99, only in black and in sizes Small to XXL. The only downside to a two-piece option is that it’s two pieces. It’s a little more difficult to pack up, takes up a little more room in your backpack and you may not have room under your bike seat for both, or either at all.
Personally- I’m going with the over jacket and over trousers. The plan is to invest in a good bike jacket that’ll serve me well through all the seasons and have my over trousers at the ready for when the weather is wet. I’ll also get an over jacket to keep around just in case things get utterly torrential with all the sudden weather changes we can expect. Better safe than sorry!
Thanks for reading everyone! Until next time!
