The Merlin Airbag System!

Hey, everyone! I’ve seen all sorts of safety related items for motorcyclists ranging from braces to back protectors but I’d never seen an airbag system up close. To me it was this pro piece of kit only affordable to the big money race riders you see on the telly.

But after having them come into GhostBikes and having a play with them- The Merlin Airbag System is easy to use, easily affordable and really effective. There are two kinds available -The universal version that you wear like a normal backpack. And an integrated version that works with Merlin Airbag Ready Jackets so that the system is a part of the jacket instead of being worn over the top.

The Merlin Airbags use a lanyard that attaches to your bike with a clip. In an accident, the lanyard pulls free from the airbag and activates the system, filling the airbag in mere milliseconds. When fully inflated the Merlin airbag creates one big cushion that covers over the tail bone, right the way up the spine and the back of the neck. It helps to keep the spine from moving in ways that it shouldn’t while ensuring the head can’t move too far back and also helps to protect the back of the ribs.

At £329.99 the Merlin airbag system is quite nicely affordable and well worth the investment for riders going fast and travelling far.

Take a Look at the The Bell RS-2 Motorcycle Helmet

Hey, everyone! This blog is a little bit of a treat for me. It’s been a while since I’ve done an entry on a Bell Helmet and as the proud owner of a Qualifier DLX that I use every day for work, it makes me happy to be able to take a look at another of their helmets. I -am- looking for a new helmet to keep on the shelf and use just for special occasions and was intending on trying another brand but Bell keeps drawing me back in.

In this blog entry we’ve got the new-at-Ghostbikes Bell RS-2 Motorcycle Helmet. It’s kind of like the big brother to the Bell Qualifier [they even share the same visor] but is the affordable little sibling to the Star series helmets. The RS-2 is a road helmet by design but demands the respect of a race helmet in several ways.

The main reason is the shell quality, a fibreglass construction that is rounded with very gentle slopes and hardly any harsh angles visible in it’s shape. These points make it a perfectly aerodynamic lid for minimal air drag and keep the helmet as light weight as possible. All of this adds to a passive protective feature that actively keeps you safe; the helmet helps you to ride for longer by preventing neck strain, making it a brilliant helmet for commuting to work, going on those longer rides out or making the most of a good track day.

Neck strain can lead to headaches which can affect can affect your concentration and also to stiff shoulders which can affect your handling of your machine. So this helmet’s shell features protect you by pitching in every little bit that it can to keep you from getting into an accident in the first place.

They are available from XS to XXL in three shell sizes and EPS liner sizes, so finding a great fit should be no problem. A great fit is for safety as well as comfort, so get one that’s good and snug and keep in mind that the padding and liners will give a little bit of room after you’ve worn it a while. But if you need a little more room in the padding, the cheek pads are interchangeable for a truly custom fit.

To help keep you comfortable the padding inside is plush and soft, fully removable for washing but you should’t need to do it often as the liner is the XT2 Silver Liner, a liner that’s stitched with silver that gives the interior of this helmet antibacterial properties.

The Bell RS-2 has an internal sun visor for those glaring rides into the sunset and is also compatible with eye wear for those of us bikers that wear glasses while riding. Speaking of visors– there are several visors available for the RS-2 ranging from Race visors to Nutra Fog II visors with prices from £55.19 to £89.72 at the time I’m writing this. And since it shares the same quick release visor as the Bell Qualifier DLX, that means the same Transitional visors that fit the Qualifier DLX are available too. No need to switch visors, just get the transitional version and you’re all set no matter the weather, a feature I enjoy wholeheartedly from my own Bell Qualifier DLX Helmet. It does leave the internal sun visor a bit redundant but damn is it cool.

For £249.99 this is a great helmet. It’s new, it’s well thought out, it’s comfortable, it’s really safe. The only thing this helmet could improve on is by providing a visor upgrade option for a pinlock ready visor with a pinlock insert- I’m interested in getting this helmet myself so I’ve been searching but with no success. That said, my Qualifier DLX isn’t Pinlock ready either but there are plenty of other products and little tricks and life hacks to making your visor more fog resistant. So it’s not a problem and certainly not a deal breaker- it doesn’t make this helmet any less of an awesome lid.

The Rev It Burn Motorcycle Jacket

Hey, everyone! It feels like it’s been quite a while since I’ve taken a look at a Rev’It! item so I was quite happy to find that I’d be taking a look at the Rev It Burn Motorcycle Jacket today. It’s a jacket I’ve personally had my eye on, or at least a very close sibling to the jacket I’ve had my eye on. The both share the same design and look remarkable similar- the only visible difference being the colour. So getting to know this jacket is a bit of a treat for me as I’ll get to make a more informed choice on the new jacket I’ll be getting after Christmas.

As usual, when it comes to Rev’It! the first thing we tend to notice is the price tag. At £219.99 its certainly not a cheap jacket- but that’s the advantage of any Rev’It! jacket you’ll ever buy- they’re not cheap jackets. They’re not cheaply made, they don’t -look- cheaply made, they’ll do their job excellently and as long as you look after the jacket- it’ll look after you. The pure quality is worth every penny.

The Rev It Burn Motorcycle Jacket specifically is more an urban styled jacket with a sport cut and a tight, race fit. It would be great whether you’re zipping around town to be social, as a courier for commuting or even as a general sport biking jacket. It doesn’t make a half-bad casual jacket either, most motorcycle jackets don’t come with a hood attached to them so you can get away with it looking like a normal soft shell. But if the hood isn’t to your liking, it can be removed and it won’t affect the performance of the jacket. At least not while you’re riding, though you may wish you had kept it on if it starts raining while you’re walking about.

The shell material of the jacket is a high density softshell of woven material that keeps the jacket breathable, flexible and durable while keeping the wearer warm and dry. To assist in keeping the rider warm the Rev It Burn has a thermal liner, like most motorcycle jackets do. It’s removable so you can leave it in if you’re cold or take it out if you’re either too warm or just prefer a bit more room inside the jacket like I tend to do.

The jacket is kept waterproof by a Hydratex®|G-Liner. This is a coating that is applied to the jacket’s inner lining and then the seams are taped to make the jacket waterproof. It’s a great liner that gives the jacket a nice, well-rounded level of all-weather protection.

I would still advise putting on an oversuit if you’re riding through sopping wet, torrential conditions though, I find that sporty jackets aren’t usually built to withstand the full, unrelenting wrath of Britain’s weather at it’s worst. But still, this jacket really tries it’s best, it even has a double front zipper with a water catcher to keep water from coming through the front.

To keep you protected the Rev It Burn has Knox Flexiform CE Protection at the shoulder and elbows but unfortunately doesn’t have a back protector installed. Before you go thinking “no worries, I’ve already got one spare at home.” know that it does have a back protector pocket but it’s specifically sized and prepared for the SEESOFT Type RV Level 2 Back Protector. The size of the jacket you get will also affect what size back protector that you will need for it. You can usually find this info inside the jacket at the opening of the pocket for the back protector. For example, my Rev It Masaru Leather Jacket in a Large would need a Type RV Back Protector in size 04.

I’m really considering this jacket for myself, or rather I’m considering getting one of it’s siblings- the Rev It Flare Motorcycle Jacket. They’re more or less identical jackets in terms of cut, style and the shape of the shell, with the same kind of fit. The only real visible difference is the Rev It Flare is only available in black or green camo and the price of the Rev It Flare is £199.99, a little less expensive than the Rev It Burn. This is because the shell of the Flare isn’t -quite- as hi-tech, being made of a 600D Polyester rib fabric. It’s still a brilliant material in it’s own right and used in lots of motorcycle gear but it’s just not as uncommon or as engineered as the High Density Softshell of the Rev It Burn.

So the question is- do I get a Burn for safety? Or do I get a Flare for style?

New! Motorcycle Jeans from Black!

Hey, everyone! The Black Brand is still growing, we’ve just got our own new line of leather jackets and now we’ve got something to wear with them- The Black Kevlar Motorcycle Jeans. It’s a shame they finally got to us as the biking season has ended and as the colder, wetter weather has set in but lets try to view this as a positive thing and welcome the first pair of Kevlar Jeans to the Black Range- The Black Ballistic Motorcycle Jeans!

Like I said, don’t brush off getting a pair of Kevlar jeans just because the winter is well on it’s way. They’re really affordable, they still make excellent casual jeans, they’ll make a brilliant gift for someone else or a treat for yourself. Perhaps think about getting your bike gear now just in case prices go up when the nice weather returns. Personally I wear my Kevlar Jeans regardless of the weather and just have either a pair of PJs under them for warmth or wear my rain trousers over them if the weather is bad. That way, I’m always ready and look normal enough to go about my day. I can hop off the bike and at most I’m just a quick slip out of my rain trousers away from being able to socialise and look casual.

So don’t let the weather hold you back from wearing what you want. The new Kevlar Jeans from Black are a great pair of casual looking jeans and they feel good too. They have just a little bit of stretch to them for comfort, making them a nicely practical pair of pants on a bike where other jeans can have a few problem areas such as the knees and rear.

For safety the Ballistic Kevlar Jeans have double stitched seams with 100% authentic Kevlar in the knees, sides of the thighs and buttocks, the usual places people tend to find they slide on in an accident. And they also have pockets in the knees and hips waiting to accept armour if you so choose to have it installed and get a bit of extra impact protection.

The Ballistic Kevlar Jeans are a standard fit and are available in a few different colours- Black, blue, olive green, and indigo and are available in waist sizes 28 through to 50, each waist size having a short, standard and long leg to choose from. But no matter the size or colour you get, they’re all the same price- we should be selling them at a recommended price of £110 but because it’s our own brand and we want to bring you the best, the Black Kevlar Jeans are all just £90 each. ARMR Moto Kumaji Motorcycle Jacket

Hey, everyone! I feel like it’s time for yours truly to get a new motorbike jacket. The Agrius Orion I currently have has done very well but with winter and heavier weathers on the way I feel like my tired old jacket could use a break. I only spent £57.99 on my Orion, so I’m looking to invest a bit more in my new jacket with a budget of up to £160.

I’ll be commuting to work in my new jacket, so it has to be long-lasting, comfortable and able to handle any kind of weather that I may have to ride through. Here where I live that can be anything from the loveliest, warmest, most sunny day ever to freezing temperatures and soggy downpours depending on the season.

But it -is- going to be a jacket for work. So I don’t want to spend a ridiculous amount on because it could be subject to less-than-gentle treatment in the form of being hastily put on in dusty environments and such. Which is why I limited my budget to about £160, I don’t want to spend £300+ on a jacket like my Rev’It Masaru that I’d rather only use on nice days for social rides.

And looking through our ARMR Moto selection- I may have found the perfect jacket. The ARMR Moto Kumaji Motorcycle Jacket is only £10 over my budget at £169.99 and has a load of features that make it perfect for a commuter like myself so I don’t even feel that extra £10 sting.

The outer shell is made from a 600D Polytech fabric, a protective material made with Polyester- a common material in motorcycle garments for it’s toughness and abrasion resistance. It’s light and it’s flexible so you can move quite freely in it but it’ll save your skin if the time comes. It also features ARMR Moto’s TLS- Triple Lock Seam Technology- it’s ARMR’s way of triple stitching seams to ensure that they’re rip-proof and will be able to handle the strain in an accident.

As well as being protective on the outside, this jacket has an awesome amount of protective potential for the inside too. The jacket comes with a CE approved back protector which is a rare thing to be included, most jackets don’t have one as standard. There’s also CE approved shoulder armour and CE the approved elbow armour has adjustable height positions so you can get in it the right place just for you. It’s even compatible with ARMR Moto’s Hexagon Chest Shield A9115 [If you can get your hands on one]. There’s even kidney protection in this jacket, another level of protection that most jackets don’t bother with.

So this jacket can take the punishment- but can it handle the weather? It probably won’t surprise you that I’m about to tell you that- yes, it can, this jacket has just as much weather versatility as it does protection. To protect you from the wet and rain, this jacket has a DRY TEK Waterproof membrane that keeps water out while still being breathable. The Storm Flap beneath the main front zip also helps to keep rain out. Usually that zip is a bit of a natural problem area when it comes to waterproofing a jacket but the storm flap in this jacket acts as a gutter to catch any water trying to get through and guide it out of the jacket. Even the two external pockets on the front are waterproof which a lot of other jackets don’t bother with, so you won’t have to stuff your phone and wallet into the same stash-pocket inside the jacket.

To see you through the colder weather comfortably, the inside of the jacket has a detachable Double Quilted Thermo Liner. This liner will keep you plenty warm when the weather hits the lower temperatures and can even be taken out to help you deal with the warmer weather.

The jacket comes with a bit more protection though. Sort of. The best way to protect you from an accident is to keep you from getting into one in the first place, so the ARMR Moto Kumaji has Scotchlite and Vision Tech Reflective panels integrated into the jacket’s design and increase your chances of being seen by other road users. To increase your chances of this even further- the jacket also comes in a Hi-Vis colour that I’m quite partial to myself- It’ll be much better for when the winter comes and the days get shorter and darker.

It’s a really well-thought-out jacket. Everything from the protection and weatherproofing to the extra stuff like the Exact Fit System and link zipper for joining the jacket to a pair of ARMR Moto Trousers, it’s all designed for a biker that rides often, for long periods or both. Perfect for a commuter that rides to work on the day-to-day, so much so that RIDE Magazine even recommend it. The ARMR Moto Kumaji Motorcycle Jacket has definitely made the short list of potential jackets that I’ll be considering next pay day.
