The Black Venture Motorcycle Trousers

Hey, everyone! I’m writing up a blog entry about another pair of pats but since I’ve already done an entry talking about the Venture Motorcycle Jacket I thought I should probably make one about the pants to go with it, The Venture Motorcycle Trousers.

Like the jacket, the Black Venture Motorcycle Trousers were designed with the commuter in mind. The style is simple, the materials are tough and there’s been a fair bit of thought put into the gear to make both the jacket and pants easy to wear for a day-to-day commuter.

The shell of the trousers are made from a 600D Polyester, a material that is quite common in making motorcycle gear as it is tough and abrasion resistant yet still light and flexible. So already you know your pants are going to be lightweight and comfy to wear, yet make a protective second skin during your commute.

Technically- these trousers are actually overtrousers, designed to go over the pants you’re already wearing and as a result of this, the venture trousers don’t have a thermal liner. This is to make the trousers easier to get on and off, saving a commuter valuable time both getting ready for work and getting ready to head home. Since they are already going over your regular trousers, Black have taken this into consideration and sized the Venture Trousers accordingly so that you can find your regular trouser size and your pair of Ventures should fit perfectly over them.

Despite not having a thermal liner and being designed to go over your normal trousers the Black Ventures do have one kind of lining. Inside the trousers is a fixed waterproof liner so that you can stand up to the wet weather on the way to work and on the way home. Black must understand that having to spend the day in wet clothes is soul crushing so if you pair these trousers with their Venture Jacket as well as their Oxygen Elite Boots and a decent pair of gloves- you’ll be able to get to work through a wet ride and go about your day comfortably.

Once over your trousers, you can use the waist adjusters to tighten the fit perfectly to keep your trousers from slipping down. There are also zips and velcro adjusters on the legs so that you can customise the fit on the cuffs of the pants as well.

For added comfort while riding the Ventures have been designed with stretch paneling at the knees and lower back so that the pants don’t shift while adjusting riding positions and the legs of the trousers don’t bunch up and rise on the leg. Just above the stretch panel on the lower back you may also notice a pair of zips- a small one and a long one. These zips are used to connect your Venture pants to your jacket so that your jacket doesn’t ride up in a forward lean and give the cold air a straight shot up your back. The longer zip makes the jacket into a joined, two-piece suit, providing better protection in a slide where skin between the trouser waist and bottom of the jacket can be exposed if you’re unlucky.

To keep you protected in an impact, even though they’re technically overtrousers, the Venture pants have CE approved knee armour installed already. So you’re getting the same protection as regular motorcycle trousers out of these over trousers.

For £52.99 you’re getting a great, versatile pair of pants that will serve a commuter well and with the Venture Jacket and other Black products, you have a truly great motorbiking outfit in your arsenal.

The Black Beacon Waterproof Rainsuit

Hey there, everyone! You’ve probably seen the title and the item featured in this entry and you must think I’m bonkers. A rainsuit in the middle of the summer? I agree, it seems quite out of place but please hear me out.

After long periods of blazing sunlight and perfect summer days you just know that eventually the weather needs to let loose and take a break. It might be sunny today but tomorrow a big, dark cloud might be looming over head and I wouldn’t want to be caught out in the rain wearing my best summer leather. So the Black Beacon Waterproof Rain Suit is the perfect solution for this.

The first reason that the Beacon Rain Suit is an excellent choice is because its a one piece suit. There are fewer seams and places for water to get in like you may find on separate pairs of over trousers and jackets where the waist and crotch can still let in water. The other advantage to a one piece suit is that its quicker. If it start raining you can hop off your bike, hop into the legs, pull it up over the shoulders and you’re done, ready to get going again.

With a two piece suit you have to struggle with getting wet while figuring out the pants and then hurry into the jacket by which time you’ve already gotten plenty soaked. Storage is also a great reason for choosing the Beacon- is comes folded up in it’s own storage bag that can easily be carried in a backpack or even stuffed under your bike seat if you have the space in there. My padlock and chain live under my seat while I ride so I keep mine in my backpack- it squashes down a bit and its a big backpack anyway so it takes up little space and adds little extra weight.

The suit its self is made from a strong waterproof material and is constructed using as few seams as possible- its one of the best if not the best rain suit on the market. The cuffs are elasticated as well as adjustable to help keep the wet out and the legs are adjustable as well in how they taper to the contours of your legs. So you can personalise the fit and improve it’s waterproofing by adjusting everything properly, as well as reduce the amount of fabric flapping while riding.

The waist of the suit has a strong strap and buckle that act as a belt. It keeps everything snugly around the waist and keeps the suit’s fit from shifting as well as also reducing how much fabric is free to flap in the wind. The zipper that you open up and step into is a three quarter length zip and has been placed at an angle on purpose. This is to allow you to get into the suit more easily and therefore more quickly to minimise the amount of time you have to spend in the rain or getting ready. Once all zipped up, another panel secures over the zip using velcro which shields the zip from any potential water that may try to seep in. To keep you warm and comfortable the collar of the Beacon rain suit is lined with a soft fleece to to avoid any irritation where the material can rub at the neck and trap some heat inside the suit.

So while the recent days may look like you won’t need it so much, it’ll rain eventually. Its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, as well, right?

Shopping for a Pair of Bike Jeans?

When shopping for anything to do with motorcycle gear it’s not uncommon to hear people ask if something is even worth the price tag. Or for us to compare price tags and go with a less expensive option because we all like to save money where we can. But there’s a particular piece of motorcycle gear where the market is only filled with expensive price tags- Biker jeans. I prefer mine to be Kevlar lined and with armour in the knees but you’d be hard pressed to find a pair below £89.99 and you’re more likely to find them over £100. So is there a difference between an £89.99 pair of Richa Hammer Jeans compared to the £179.98 Rev’It Nelson Jeans beside the huge price gap?

Yes, there is a difference. On the outside you’re just looking at a pair of jeans but what do they have beneath the denim? Instead of just going by price, really consider what you want out of your jeans first so that you can compare apples to apples properly.

More often than not you can expect to be getting more features if you’re willing to spend more money. The range of features in the jeans can include reinforced materials, armour pockets, armour pockets with armour actually in them, waterproofing and more. So you can spend £89.99 on the Richa Hammers that provide an aramid lined pair of jeans with CE Level 1 armour in the knees. Or you can spend £199.98 on the Rev’It Orlandos and you’ll get a pair of jeans with all the bells, whistles and waterproofing.

So I’m going to outline some of my personal choices based on different price ranges- Under £100, £101 to £150 and £151+.

I’ve already mentioned my first pick as my choice for the under £100 range is the Oxford Super Sliderz SS2 Kevlar Jeans. For £89.99 you’re getting a really good pair of jeans with a great level of protection. Underneath what is already a really protective shell, with triple stitching, they’re lined with 100% DuPont Kevlar, some of the best and most abrasive resistant material if you ever happen to find yourself sliding down the road. For a bit of better impact protection the Oxford Sliderz come supplied with certified CE Level 1 armour for the knees too. They also have a heavy duty fly zip, something I really like about these jeans as I’ve always found buttons to be fiddly and not as secure. They’re an excellent pair of pants that offer most of what a biker needs out of a pair of jeans in this price range.

My next pick, for the £101 to £150 price range is the Furygan Jean 01 Textile Motorcycle Trousers. At £119.99 they offer a fair bit. Its reinforced with triple and quadruple stitching to ensure it all stays together in a slide, they have Kevlar aramid reinforcements and they come with armour for the knees. Honestly my only little gripe about these jeans is that they look a bit plain but I’m sure with a while of wear and some washes that will just fix it’s self and give them some more character.

And lastly, for my £151+ price range I have to choose the Rev’It Orlando H2O Black Motorcycle Jeans. For £199.98 you’d hope these jeans have a whole lot to offer and they really do. There’s reinforced materials like polycotton twill, stretch Denim and Rev’It’s PWR Shield lining- these jeans are tough and will save your skin. It has SEESMART CE Level 1 armour protection in the knees, is prepared with pockets for additional hip protection, tripple needle stitching- there’s so much these jeans dedicated to making them as safe as they look awesome. And the icing on the cake is that these jeans also have a waterproof membrane- so if it rains, you can leave your over-trousers at home and you can keep looking awesome.

So those are a few of my favourite jeans, currently. I hear one of our own brands, Black, may be doing jeans in the future as well so I really look forward to that and presenting those to you.

Road Trip Part 4 – But what should I wear?

Hello again! Welcome to part 4 of my Road Trip Blog series where I discuss my plans for a future trip and how I’ll be tackling any thoughts and questions I may have about what I’ll need or have to do on my journey. In this part I’ll be talking about the fourth question that comes to mind when I think about taking a long trip- the gear I’m wearing.

You need a lot out of your gear if you plan on riding long distances or plan on riding a lot in general. It needs to be tough, protective, versatile and adaptive as the conditions on the road can change at a moment’s notice. So we will start with the jacket, pants and what traits/features they need:

A tough shell for breaking through strong winds on motorways
Waterproofing for wet weather
Ventilation for when it’s getting warm
Thermal lining / heat retention for when it’s getting cold
Comfort

For the jacket my personal choice would be the Oxford Montreal 2.0 Motorcycle Jacket. I’ve already written a blog post about the Montreal Jacket so I won’t go into too much detail- but put simply, it has everything needed from the aforementioned list. It has a tough shell made from durable materials and stitching with adjusters in all the right places for a custom fit to the rider, allowing the jacket to break through the wind at higher speeds such as on motorways while keeping the rider comfortable. It also has ventilation, a removable thermal lining, a waterproof lining and plenty of pocket space as an extra. The only thing it needs is a bit of extra back protection slipped into the provided back armour pocket and it’s a perfect jacket for touring.

For pants, I want a pair that can attach to the jacket and has all the same qualities of the jacket. So my pick would be the Oxford Ranger 2.0 Motorcycle Trousers. I’ve already written a blog post on the Ranger Trousers so I also won’t go too in-depth about them. But like the jacket- it has everything a biker going on a long journey needs. The durable shell for breaking through the wind, plus extra in critical areas. The waterproof lining plus extra areas of waterproofing in the knees and crotch where other brands tend to overlook. Ventilation that can be opened or closed and a removable thermal lining. Stretch panels for extra comfort in the knees and rear to keep them from shifting around, bunching up on my shins and riding up the rear end. It really does have all you need out of a pair of trousers. And like the jacket- the pockets are a welcome bonus too with easy access to cargo pockets without having to dismount the bike.

But- this is in a perfect world where everything else I need hasn’t already burned a hole in my wallet and immolated my bank account to punish me for spending so much. So is there a more affordable option? Yes there is and I recently purchased it. The Agrius Orion Jacket and Agrius Hydra Trousers kit combo. Sure, they aren’t as fancy as the Oxford stuff and won’t come with all the same leisures the Montreal or the Rangers have to offer but they still have everything I need at a basic level. They’re tough, waterproof, have removable thermal liners and are designed to be more sport-tourer oriented. I’ve also done blog posts on them before if you’re interested. You can get yourself an Agrius Kit for a bargain, I’d love to get myself some Oxfords but I love my Agrius stuff and it’ll do the job just fine

And that’s what I’ll be wearing mostly. I’ll cover some more garments in my next Road Trip installment such as boots, gloves and I’ll finish up with a 6th post on helmets that I either plan to get for my trip myself or alternatives as the costs are starting to climb. Hope to see you there!

The Black Atom Motorcycle Trousers

Hey everyone! It’s Matt with another pair of motorcycle trousers to talk about but I’m still on about Ghostbikes’ own brand Black. The Black Atom Motorcycle Trousers to be exact- An affordable, quality piece of kit that has plenty going for it.

The shell of the trousers are made from a 600D Polyester- a pretty typical material used in making motorcycle gear but is tried and tested for being flexible yet tough and abrasion resistant. So its good stuff for breaking through the wind, protecting you from the elements and protecting your skin if you happen to find yourself sliding down the road some time. On the knees of the trousers there are panels of accordion stretch fabric, this serves a couple of purposes. The first is for comfort, it means you aren’t going to be uncomfortable feeling the materials pull taut around your knees or bunch up on the legs over your boots. It also means that the CE rated knee armour isn’t going to shift around or move further up the leg- so it’s always where it needs to be to do it’s job should it need to. Although it doesn’t have it installed- there are also extra pockets for knee armour, if you fancy upgrading your protection. There are already some thin, foam inserts in these pockets but they’re more for giving the trousers a bit of shape and comfort than protection.

A great feature on this pair of trousers is the zips that it has. Not the pocket zips though- the connector zips on the back of the waist. These zips give you the option to connect your trousers to a jacket with compatible zippers, like the Black Piston Motorcycle Jacket, either to create a small and easily undo-able connection to keep your jacket from riding up or using the bigger zip to create a more one piece like suit. This has a number of benefits as well, it not only ensures that your gear is staying in all the places that it should be but it also helps prevent the garments from separating in a slide to reveal areas of skin that wont take as well to skidding down the road.

Inside the trousers you’ll find a thermal liner for keeping you warm on the colder rides. But if you fancy a bit of extra breathing room or the weather is a bit too warm- this liner can easily be removed and saved for later. For added comfort and security the trousers have adjusters on the waist for a close fit and to keep them in the right place and adjusters at the ankles. The ankle adjusters have a few purposes- they can open out more to have your trousers over the outside of your boots, tighten up so you can have them tucked into your boots and also- when done properly, help prevent rain water getting up and into the legs of your pants.

So the Black Atom Motorcycle Trousers offer a fantastic level of protection and also provide a couple of extra luxuries to help keep you comfortable and safe. For £44.99 these trousers are amazing value for money and would make a fine addition to a biker’s summer arsenal.
